Olpe (Pitcher)

Nants ingonyama bagithi Baba
Sithi uhm ingonyama!

When I first saw this pitcher,
I immediately
thought about
the Disney Classic
The Lion King
Within the registers, there are lions,
panthers, boars
and swans. In this
piece, only like cream
color is used with black and a rusty
 red. I like how
there are wild animals that would be
found in Africa
are found on this pitcher during Ancient
Greece.

I love how the heads of the lions
almost look like the shishi dogs.
(the chinese dogs that we see in chinese
restaurants) I will forever embrace this piece
as the "Lion King" piece. Love it!

Corinth. 650-625 B.C. Ceramic with black-figure
decoration, height 12 7/8"

  1. I like how you have related this piece to something contemporary and relevant to your life. Why do you think they used animals from Africa when the vase is from Greece?

  2. I believe there were lions in Europe a long time ago.

  4. I love how you related it to The Lion King; that's what this peice reminds me of too! It does look somewhat like an African peice because of the colors and the animals painted on the pitcher. I suppose though, behind all the cities, beaches, and other beautiful sceneries, there must have been some jungle life (especially because it was many years ago).
    Love this peice!!! <3

  6. This piece, while related to the Lion King, also reminds me of Hercules. Yeah, I know it's from Greece, but Hercules took place there, right? Also, the design kind of looks like there's a party going on!

  7. well now that you compare this piece to the lion king it seems much more interesting (imagine that) i think what i enjoy the most about this piece is that even though there is a lot to look at its still a fairly simple piece of work.

  8. There are certain pieces of artwork that convey the shifting influences of culture and skill. Corinth was a port city. Imagine how exciting that time was. Almost like a New York City in ancient times. Did this olpe serve the wealthy? Priests? Or was it used at festivals? My guess is it was used for wine, honey, water or oil. The artist used the natural color of the clay and orientalizing designs to produce this olpe. Maybe it was for a warrior or hunter. It is a valuable piece that shows the change of design influences in ancient artwork.

  9. Considering Lion King is one of my all time favorite movies EVER! I really do love this pitcher. It truly does have an African vibe to it. I enjoy the way everything is balanced and everything is proportioned. Really good piece.
